Fresno / Clovis Remodeling Projects

December 26, 2012

Every home renovation project comes with its own quirks, challenges, and wins. To set yourself up for the most successful home remodeling project possible, we recommend using the following tips and tricks.

1. Formulate a Plan
If you just throw yourself into a project without a plan, you’re going to come out confused, and likely disappointed. The best way to achieve a look and style that you’ll love for years is to first spend time figuring out what looks and styles you love. It seems simple, but many people don’t do it. It’s a good idea to visit showrooms, browse magazines, and look online for products and styles that you love. That way, when you meet with a remodeling consultant, you’ll be able to give him or her direction as to what it is you’re envisioning in your space.

2. Know What Matters
When in remodel in a kitchen or bathroom space, appliances are key. In order to plan and execute a successful remodel, you are going to want to educate yourself about the size, function, and overall style of new appliances to fit your space. Space matters, and so does placement when it comes to functionality, so knowing your stuff here will really help you in the long run. It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the prices of the appliances you like the most versus the features that they come with over more affordable versions.

3. Money, Money, Money
Before any project begins, you must be aware of how much you are willing to spend and how much your dream remodel is going to cost. If those two numbers are vastly different, it’s time to either revisit the vision or hold off on remodeling. Many designers encourage homeowners to prioritize within the budget, spending the most on the aspects of the remodel that are most important to you while reserving some aspects that you could do without.

What comes first: the budget or the vision? It all depends on your flexibility. But even if you have a lot of funds and can afford whatever you dream up, it’s a good idea to set a limit for yourself. It’s also a good idea to allow for a little wiggle room with the budget so that you aren’t totally blindsided should unexpected costs arise along the way (and they always do!).

4. Vet and Hire a Contractor
Finding a contractor that you trust and who will do a good job with your space is a very important part of the process. The contractor is going to be spending a good deal of time in your home and is also going to greatly affect the outcome of your home, so you want to make sure that you are working with someone that you trust. When looking for a contractor, it’s a good idea to ask friends, neighbors, family members, and colleagues for recommendations. If you aren’t working with someone that has been personally recommended to you, always check a contractor’s references, and ask to speak with prior clients of the contractor’s to get a solid sense of his or her work.
