Deck or Patio? What is Right for Me?

What is the difference between patios and decks?

What is the benefit of getting decks or patios? How do I know which one is right for my house and my lifestyle? Those are frequently asked questions, and we have some answers. First, here is the definition of deck and patio.
Deck
A deck is an open platform that is an extension to your house without a roof. It is constructed of materials like wood or vinyl. Decks can be added to the outdoor living space, outdoor kitchen, or rooftop balcony, and can give the homeowner an excellent view of the outside surroundings.

Patio/Floor
A patio is a paved area that is on the ground and is attached to the house. It is outside the home and can be around the garden or pool.
It is generally made of concrete material, stones, bricks or pavers. They are mostly not covered and do not have a rail. They can have built-in fire pits, barbeques, and other party accessories.

Deck vs. Patio
Let us compare the two to get an idea of what should be a perfect idea if you are undergoing a home renovation or house remodeling.

Return on Investment
Home Renovations can be elemental for getting a patio or deck constructed in your house. Most people who buy houses are looking for a great view and a chilling outdoor space; hence decks and patios offer a great return of investment.
On average, the ROI for a new deck is around 75%, and the ROI for a patio is between 30-60%. You can make a great profit by having this addition to your home or get your deck or patio repairs done.

Maintenance
The best part about Patios is that they do not need any regular maintenance. They are made of bricks, concrete, and stone and are generally outside your home, so they are durable and withstand a lot of climatic and other wear and tear. They are incredibly durable. However, if you live in very extreme climates cracking of your patio can be a problem.
On the other hand, decks need maintenance and cleaning from time to time. They need to be washed and taken care of from time to time. Since they are made of wood, they can rot over a period or get discoloration.

Cost
While you are getting your house or apartment constructed, it is crucial to check the cost of building a deck or a patio.

Customization
A Deck can be colored and decorated with a wide range of patterns, colors, wood types, and paint options. It does not involve breaking down your home and getting anything constructed from scratch. However, a patio is made of concrete material, stones, bricks or pavers, and breaking and customizing can be a little cumbersome.

Permits
If you wish to install a patio, you do not generally need a permit or any inspections. But in most towns building a deck may need permits.
