Clients who opt for a niche see many advantages; the most obvious is storage. Who wants to see their bath products on the floor or unorganized in a corner? Not me. Niches give your shampoo, conditioner and other items a home.
Another advantage of opting for a niche is in the design. A shower niche can catch your eye and add flair to the shower while accentuating the bathroom’s overall look. It’s also a chance to repeat a unique tile or pattern used in the overall design. Want to make your niche a focal point? Try adding contrasting tiles.
Niches can be considered art in an otherwise empty space. When niches highlight a shower design, their seemingly understated presence gives the shower a bolder and more beautiful end result. When designing your niche, however, there are three important details to consider.

Base Cabinets
Base cabinets are the lower cabinets that act as a base for countertops. These cabinets must be strong and sturdy. A base cabinet sits low on the floor and typically measures 24 inches deep. Base cabinets can be made to any depth from about 16 inches all the way up to 36 inches deep. The deeper your cabinets the more storage space you will have.
Wall Cabinets

The plywood inside high-end cabinet drawers comes in 5/8 inch thickness. For even greater durability and strength, custom cabinets may use ¾ inch plywood in the drawers. When selecting your cabinet drawers, the minimum thickness should be ½ inch plywood.
A number of low-end and middle-range cabinet drawers are made with laminated particle board. A particle board is good for drawer boxes, but will fail to hold up the drawers. Most manufacturers will upgrade your drawers to plywood for an extra charge.
Cabinet Doors
Cabinet doors are the face of your kitchen remodel. Since they are a major visual component of the space, the look sets the tone for the kitchen.
These doors are made in one or two different ways: either in a framed or slab door.
A slab door style is flat on both sides and looks like a single piece of wood. A framed door contains a center panel—usually wood or veneered plywood—to match the framing lumber.
In addition to these two basic styles, the third element to consider is overlay. Overlay relates to how the door fits to the cabinet. If the overlay is set on top of the door opening, overlapping the opening on all sides, it is an overlay door. If it is set solely inside the cabinet door, it will be an inset door.

An increase in home sales and the emergence of low financing costs is leading to a rise in home construction, according to several studies. The result is an increase in home improvements and home remodeling, which has been notably down from their norm in recent years.
In 2007, the home improvement industry brought in $328 billion, according to the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University. That number has since been on a downward turn. In 2011, spending in the same areas clocked in at $275 billion. However, although data is still being collected for 2012, it appears that an 11% increase has occurred.
This is of course good news for the construction markets and for the economy at large. Increases in spending show increased confidence in the economy, greater job security, and less of a desire to plan ahead out of fear.
Projects such as refinished or remodeled basements, new kitchens, and new additions to homes are now on the rise. “When the market isn’t doing well, people learn to deal with what they have,” said one housing expert. “Rather than aim bigger, they make do. Now, we’re seeing people dreaming up new spaces for their homes, and they’re actually going for it.”
However, not all homemakers are having an easy time getting financing for such projects. Homeowners with negative equity, in other words, homeowners who owe more on their homes than the home is worth, will have a very difficult time getting financing for a home improvement project. Studies show that those who have equity will spend 22% more on home improvements than those without, and therefore, it’s those who have equity that are fueling this recent uptick in home remodeling. These families are shifting their focus from moving to bigger homes and are instead making their current homes into their “dream homes”. This movement – colloquially called “aging-in-place”, is a major force behind the push toward home improvement projects.
Though it is in part economic fears that are keeping people in place, the comfort associated with deciding to stay in one place is what is motivating those same individuals to remodel their homes.
